I got to do something this year that I have been meaning to do for a long time. In January I spent a few hours at the Two Old Hippies booth at NAMM. There was so much fun stuff to look at there I never got to cross the line from Bedell to Breedlove. I guess we’ll have to go back.

Each year, at NAMM, we look forward to viewing the latest innovations, those presenting their new products to the music industry for the first time. This year we again found the wacky, the wonderful, and some stuff that is just plain wrong. We also found one of the coolest drum sets you will ever see. It started in the press room.

There is a room at every NAMM show that isn’t part of the main exhibit hall area. It is outside, all by itself near the John Lennon Stage, by the bus. It is a magical place. It is the Roland Room.

Roland is one of those companies that has created technology for all of our favorite tools. Keyboards, guitars, drums, live sound, recording equipment, microphones, monitors – the list is endless and they have been consistently on the front edge. Innovators of some of our favorite sounds, they seem to have perfected the business model for the digital age. Providing cutting-edge technology in user-friendly instruments with price points for consumers and pros alike. When you see the Roland logo you know great minds have been at work.

NAMM Show Highlights: Dan Grigor Talks with PickGrips

02/16/12 18:48, by , Categories: BFMN Exclusive, Dan Grigor, Review, NAMM 2012, NAMM 2012 Music , Tags: 12-string, barefoot, bfmn, dan grigor, guitar, guitar pick, namm, pickgrips

by Dan Grigor

I hate having a microphone stand in front of me and usually put it off to the side or behind me. Therefore, the standard pick holders that you see everywhere don’t really work for me. I hate that look of the pick thingie that fits on a mic stand right in front of a guitarist. It’s distracting and it’s often mounted in the normal place you would grab a stand to move it. I gave up on them and, like many of us guitarists, keep a spare pick hung at the headstock, sort of half-woven between the tails of my top 6 strings. That works fine on the 12-string but not on my Strat. You can weave one in, but not in a way that would be easy to pull out in the middle of a song.

Then I found PickGrips at NAMM 2012.

Dan Grigor Reviews the Bedell 12-String Guitar, a Beautiful Blonde

Publisher Dan Grigor and Tom Bedell at NAMM

by Dan Grigor

OK, I’ll admit it, he had me from the first picture on the first page I saw of his website: a barefoot old hippie and his guitars. The second shot is one of him at 14, barefoot with his guitar. I liked that. Then I played one of his guitars and we instantly became friends.

Tom Bedell is one of those guys who found his passion young, grabbed hold, and out of it made a lifestyle and a livelihood that has served him and his family since 1964. He was 14 years old when he sold his first one and his guitars have matured along with his skill. One chasing the other even now, silver-haired and much wiser. He has been inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Twice. This year, he was elected to the Board of Directors of NAMM. His passion for music is apparent and now, more than ever, he has the ability to share it with the world.

He is a craftsman and an artisan who has filled his shop with craftsmen and artisans and the smell of good wood.  Honing the craft was half the passion – the elusive search for the perfect guitar – the other half is a passion for music and sharing his gift so others can share theirs.
