Kevat vasymys strikes this time every year. Go look at bright lights and vivid colours. Play loud music. Writer’s block will Evaporate, or if you’re lucky Sirkkaporate.

Hey, I like your list of festivals but you left off one of my favorites. Desert Rocks music festival in Moab, Utah. Its a rolicking good time of folk and jam band music in the beautiful Moab desert. I just wanted to let you know about it so you could in turn spread the word.

P.S. I’m in no way affiliated with the festival, just an avid fan.

I really enjoyed this article, great sensory effects at the fair. I grew up listening to Glen’s hits but didn’t never knew of his human side, fascinating. I especially loved how that timeless photo of the fair tied it all together. Its a great shot, reminds me of a Francis Ford Coppola film. The silhoutte sky is just haunting. Great article!

In response to: Take Control Over Your Own Sound and... er... Sorry About Being Late

Hey, with the bad back I have gone all quasimotor… The speaker is still in the back of Eric’s car so I can’t comment much on it, but the great thing about it is it’s small size and has tremendous power. Not the kick of a full size speaker but I can set it up as my monitor and mike it into the larger system. I can also jack it in to the larger system, but then I would lose it as a monitor and I think there is a “fullness” you get from miking in. You mentioned once that the whole thing was a learning experience. A lot of it is hit and miss, see what works and what doesn’t. A musicians instrument does not stop at the instrument itself, it starts inside the musician and extends through the instrument and into the electronics and supporting systems. Each musician has to have control of all of that. And as each “voice” is unique different setups are going to work for different people. As a band leader you know you have to know even more about what’s going on. You’ve been at this longer than me.

So do I understand Paul your new style is to be Quasimotown? I went tube amp vintage 12″ speaker and funky Green Bullet some time back, and now on occasion want some really clean sound. The pedal is a good way to achieve a range of sounds. Try a programmable one with about ten presets you have made and stored. (e.g.Zoom G2) The audience appreciates the variety too.
Sound men are an excellent resource for carrying heavy speakers and boards after that, just give them the beer and tell them not to bother you and your correctly trimmed pedal, until its time for them to carry again

Thanks for a great interview. I’ve enjoyed Stanley’s playing since the 70’s. He’s playing here in Brisbane, Australia, tomorrow night. I need to get my shit together and go!

In response to: Lloyd Gregory, an Introspective

Comment from:

Barefoot and I have received a very kind thank you from Mr. Gregory and information about the fabulous drummer and percussionist.

“The Drummer on the Yoshi’s date referred to is:
Billy ” Shoes” Johnson - formally with “Maze” & “Santana”

The Percussionist is : James Henry from “Narada Micheal Waldens” camp

I would like to thank for the wonderful article you wrote on my behalf , I
am humbled that you took out the time to be so kind to me.
I would also like to thank Mr. Bourgeois for his wonderful words also .
I just pray people enjoy my music as much as I enjoy playing it for them.
Peace
Sincerely
Lloyd Gregory”

I do this because I enjoy it and I want to know. And the knowledge expands. Apparently, James Henry’s mentor and I studied, for a short time, under the same guru. Small world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narada_Michael_Walden

Lloyd Gregory has about five albums (which I now seek). I have been listening to samples on his Myspace Page. His latest is Free Falling, I beieve. I would have more information for you, unfortunately my Myspace defaults to Finnish. So I despair my life and present this portion of his bio from his Myspace. http://www.myspace.com/lloydgregory

“…Gregory has released five critically acclaimed albums of his own, he has also recorded with Martha Reeves, MC Smooth and Freddie Stewart (Sly & The Family Stone); and has performed onstage with Rodney Franklin, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Gerald Albright, Lenny Williams (Tower of Power), Freda Payne, The Dells, and Lowell Fulsom. He spent years touring extensively while serving as the musical director for The Ballads, Natural Four and Jesse James, and performed on their albums…”

I’ve seen Lloyd many times and his live shows are spectacular. He’s come up with another great commercial success in the making with his new self-titled CD. He has many attributes but to say “virtuoso"….(an inside joke). Lloyd is a extremely talented musician complimented by being simply a great person.
