Monday Morning Blues and the $110,000 Martin D-100 Guitar

We spent a lot of time at the Martin booth at NAMM 2010. We got a great video tour with Chris Thomas; we talked with him and interviewed Jorma Kaukonen and heard him play. The highlight of the day, though, was getting to play the coolest guitars in the building. This Tasty Riffs video features two BareFoot MusicNews Exclusives. As far as we know, Dan Grigor was the only player at NAMM 2010 to play the museum piece double-neck and the hundred and ten thousand dollar D-100.

To start out, we show you the signature Jorma Kaukonen “M” size guitar with the enlarged sound hole. What a sound! This big-sound, performers guitar rang and rang, loud and clear.

Next we try the Museum Piece Double-Neck. I should say right off that what you see is what you get. I had never touched that guitar before you see it happen and I never tried that song on a double-neck before in my life. Not bad, not bad.

After that I was handed the fabulous $109,999 Martin D-100. Mere pictures and sound from the convention floor do not do justice to this amazing guitar. It was beautiful: the wood, the stunning inlay work, the sound, the feel. It was a privilege and a pleasure to play it. You could almost feel the history dripping off of this guitar. A million guitars they made before they made this one. I’d say they got it right.

Thanks to Chris Thomas and the crew at Martin Guitars for this once in a lifetime opportunity to play these wonderful instruments. Guitars that no one else got to play, that will land in the Martin Museum with a long silver beard hair inside and my fingerprints on the outside.

We’re not done yet. Check the main page for a great interview with Chris Thomas. He tells us how Martin Guitars started and how they create this incredible line of popular guitars. After that we still have the great interview with legendary guitar player Jorma Kaukonen. Subscribe to our feed and you won’t miss a thing.

Stay Tuned!
There’s more.
