Catfish Takes a Close Look at the Coolest Guitar on the Wall

I was noodling around on a Schecter Solo-6 Custom at Namm 2010. Wow! What a sweet guitar. We have the standard “it played like buttah” saying around here for nice axes — this one was one of those that really did. It kind of was a single cutaway Les Paul shape but it was just way nicer than your typical Les Paul…not to bash Gibson, or my hero Les Paul in any way, shape or form. This particular guitar was way nice and I call ‘em as I see ‘em. Period.

It had this killer tobacco sunburst finish and the sunburst detail was even applied on the back of the neck and the back of the body. Who does that? Schecter does.

Cisco Robles Live from NAMM2010 at gig-fx

While at the gig-fx booth at NAMM2010 with HeXx Henderson we heard that Cisco Robles was going to be there as well. Catfish and I couldn’t resist hanging around and talking and listening to his set. We have a lot in common, Cisco and I. We were both born in NY in the same year. He has been playing nearly as long as I have. We’re both in California now and both playing the blues. I guess you can say I can relate to his path. A stunning guitar player, he plays a great set and is as knowledgeable as he is stylish in an interview with Frank Butler.

At the 2010 Winter NAMM Show we caught up with legendary guitarist, Dewayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight, who was performing with TM Stevens (Shocka Zooloo) and Jonas Hellborg at the Warrick/Framus booth. McKnight had just been signed by Framus amps that day and we were lucky enough to see him perform on a Framus amplifier for the first time since his endorsement. They had quite a crowd gathered as they pushed the envelope on the decibel limits set by the NAMM Noise Patrol.

StayTuned! There’s MORE!

So we were leaving the 2010 Winter NAMM convention and we walked up on a Drum Circle that had just begun out front near the John Lennon Bus. Now I have heard that distinctive thump in my chest from a marching band passing in a parade and even Native American drum competitions at Pow Wows where a dozen or so drummers do their thing in unison.  They are amplified and run through a P.A. system which makes it louder and, of course, it is all heavily practiced beforehand.

This drum circle, however, was like both of those examples times 100, without amps or mics, and unrehearsed. As a musician myself, I always feel a rare sense of accomplishment when I can play a song with a thrown-together group for the first time, and pull off a start-to-finish thing that doesn’t blow chunks the first go-around. That makes this really fascinating to me.

An Open Letter by Frank Butler to Steve White and Some Q & A with Steve

A lot has happened since our last interview for Share My Guitar back in the Summer of ‘09. When I saw you perform at Dizzy’s in San Diego shortly thereafter (which was awesome, by the way), I noticed that your voice was gravelly when you spoke and that you were smoking heavily before and after your set. I believe you were on your way to Finland to record another album soon after that.

The next thing I heard was that you had throat cancer and were in serious physical trouble. It weighed heavily on my mind that you were so ill as I felt we had bonded in some way through our interview. We had an unusual connection with both living in Southeast Asia in our youth and, of course, the blues and guitar connection. I monitored your condition through Alda and your website, but I didn’t want to contact you and appear to be capitalizing on your illness for the sake of an article.

A Q&A interview with Steve and a great performance video from his show at NAMM.
