Providence, Rhode Island’s hard rockers, Kanerko, made their return to the stage May 28th after a year and a half away. With opening bands Stoic and Burn The Witch, you knew it was going to be a great night at Providence’s Firehouse 13.

The guys in Kanerko had taken some time away from the music because, as vocalist Al Mahoney says, “We needed a break from each other mentally and musically. The writing was getting stale.” Luckily for their fans, the four soon came to realize that they were miserable not playing together.

The Angry Mix

Paul BourgeoisOk! I’m going to rant and rave and complain about some technical problems the band “The Blue Monsters” has been having. Some people might find it instructive. I just need to get this crap out of my system before I explode.

Just so you understand, the sound man’s job is to set up the levels and actively monitor a gig because the songs keep changing. Sometimes certain instruments have different settings, are stronger in the mix, sometimes the vocals are softer, the dynamics are different. Sometimes there are harmonies. The sound man’s job is not to entertain girls and drink up the musician’s beer. So you are about to bear witness to an actual band problem right now! Enjoy.

For Ronnie James Dio, legendary vocalist for Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and Dio, the battle with stomach cancer is over, according to his wife, Wendy Dio. He was 67 years old. Today his official website is simply a black page, featuring the following message from his wife:

Message from Wendy Dio

Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever. - Wendy Dio

You can leave your condolences on Facebook

Faded Natives Live From San Diego Springfest 2010

05/13/10 15:41, by , Categories: Welcome, Music News, Festivals and Events, Bands , Tags: allied gardens, faded natives, george reeves, san diego, windmill farms

For the second time in as many years Allied Garden’s own Faded Natives rocked SpringFest San Diego. This year it was different. This year they opened for Mobility on the Windmill Farms main stage.

They played their part and got the crowd pumped up and brought a couple sets full of our favorite rock and roll. The “new guy” fits right in, doesn’t he? On one of their breaks I ran up there and met him and got the skinny from the “friendly” one and a thumbs up from the “quiet” one. I managed to convince one to take off his shoes but you’ll have to watch the video to see which one becomes the barefoot one. Brock Scott played rock-solid drums, Len McFadden nailed it as the new bass player, and George Reeves shredded the guitar riffs. The power trio was a great choice for a party in the park.

BFMN is Pleased to Introduce Dimples, Our Seattle Photog

05/10/10 17:14, by , Categories: Welcome, BareFoot Fotogs, Dimples , Tags: digital effects, dimples, grigor, nikon, no edit photo, seattle

Josh “Dimples” Grigor – otherwise known as Dan’s youngest son – owns and is the principle photographer for No Edit Photo in Seattle, WA.

With a photo style he describes as “helping you see the music,” he paints with light and shadow onto the shot. The apparent effects you see are what was shot. There is no edit. Get it? No Edit Photo. The only digital function performed on any of his photos is to rotate and occasionally crop.

Josh shoots with all Nikon equipment and, with fast flashes and slow shutters, helps you see the movement of the artist. Capturing movement and the energy of a live show is his specialty.

World's First Global Musical Instrument Museum Opens in Phoenix

04/26/10 18:15, by , Categories: Welcome, Music News , Tags: eric clapton, grand canyon, john lennon, mim, musical instrument museum, phoenix

After a visit to a musical instrument museum in Brussels, Belgium, former Target stores chairman Bob Ulrich had a dream to build a museum dedicated to musical instruments from around the world. That dream became a reality April 24, as a $250 million global musical instrument museum opened its doors in north Phoenix.

The World’s First Global Musical Instrument Museum, or MIM, features more than 12,000 instruments and objects. “There is nothing that really covers the world in music and yet day in and day out what has more impact on people’s lives than music?” Ulrich said. And that concept was incorporated into the Vision for the museum with the statement, “Music is something all humans share, a source of beauty and comfort in our daily lives, a means to give voice to our joy in times of celebration and a powerful force that brings us all together. Music is the lifelong friend that we all have in common.”

Live Music: Call For Info

04/18/10 02:59, by , Categories: Welcome, Guitar, BFMN Exclusive, CFI, Catfish , Tags: barefootmusicnews, bfmn, call for info, carol kaye, catfish butler, dan grigor, garage band

We had this idea about rounding up some musicians for the BareFootMusicNews “house” blues band that will be known as
Call For Info.

Dan Grigor and I sat around talking about a plan to put it together as a reality-type series of video clips for BFMN. The premise would be: Show those who never get off their rear ends to actually start a band that gets out of the garage and plays paying gigs just how it is done.
