The Front Man (Tectonic Shift, Part 2 of 3)

He trilled "...it will be forever..." but everything was suddenly off in his head, the progression off, and he couldn't find the resolving note. He just kept leading himself into more melody, different melody, shifting, his harp and heart spiraling into a bottomless pit of music, the thought of losing his own words, all the effort he had put into shaping his own voice, all that gone. Six years of singing gone. Everything else was falling apart for him. His home, his family. He shifted the root note on his harmonica, the key signature long since worn away, and he warbled a strange scale up and down the instrument. It was only balance; it was only fair. more »

We are spring cleaning today in my home, a time for reflection, looking at the old, looking forward to the new. So I am sitting down doing the same for Barefoot, looking back. BareFootMusicNews has come a long way since then, two NAMM conventions, interviews with a lot of prominent music people, including the legendary Stanley Clarke. more »

But Eric has been dragging me into the twanging whining pain filled reality of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. That would be Jason Isbell. I used to think Drive By Truckers were a bunch of Lynyrd Skynyrd wantabees. And so what if they are? They had been around for five years before they brought Jason Isbell in as a third guitarist. He was a brilliant young man who came riding into and through the band straight out of school and three years, creative differences, and an ex-wife later, Drive By Truckers is still Drive By Truckers and Jason Isbell is a solo artist. more »

Look... fear, anger, death, violence, lack of ambition and frustration are all great subjects for songs. So if you have them inside you, why not use them constructively. Me? I've just been hanging about playing computer games waiting for inspiration. more »

Take Control Over Your Own Sound and... er... Sorry About Being Late

Permalink 02/28/11 03:01, by Paul Bourgeois, Categories: BFMN Exclusive, Monday Morning Musical Musings, Paul Bourgeois , Tags: amplifier, harmonica, paul bourgeois, pedal, sound equipment, the blue monsters
The amp I use is an old and small 1970s guitar amp. It is not a tube amp but it is extremely powerful. If you plug a Fender into it you can get a real vintage sound. It also provides some really nice volume/reverb based distortion effects for the harp. But to get really clean vocals through that amp you have to set input volume at low, master volume at high, bass and reverb to 0 and jack the treble up to full. more »

Being 2011, a new year again, I reflect on my miserable and wonderful life and wonder where I am going. I have to face some harsh things, strip myself naked and put it all out there for myself to look at. The ugly truth. more »
