Her fingers flitted across the keys like a hummingbird’s wings, and the crowd moved in time; she captured them as she has so many times before.

Sunnie Paxson, one of the first four artists on Stanley Clarke’s new Roxboro Entertainment label, first reached for those ivory keys as a young child in Philadelphia, also Stanley’s home town. She grew with the instrument, becoming a student of jazz with world-renowned French jazz pianist Bernard Peiffer, the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and the Berklee College of Music. By this time she was adding flavors of soul and funk into her special style of play. Enter Mr. Stanley Clarke.

Kennard Ramsey album SOMOS

You may not know his name but I guarantee you have heard his music. Kennard Ramsey has contributed to some of our favorite movies, television shows and commercials.

His friendship and collaboration with Stanley Clarke spans decades. When Stanley started his label, Roxboro Entertainment, he convinced Kennard to record his own music and share it with us.

We had the opportunity to hear it first-hand, up-close and personal, and I had the best seat in the house.

BFMN Exclusive...Grammy Winner Ruslan Sirota Live at The Federal Bar

You could see the excitement in his eyes. The young man had been playing music since he was a boy at his guitarist father’s knee. He was a touring musician at 16, and his musical talent had earned him a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music. He’d been playing with the extraordinary Stanley Clarke for half a dozen years - was nominated for a Grammy for his work on The Stanley Clarke Band’s last album - but when Ruslan Sirota spoke of Clarke, Chick Corea and George Duke you could see he was still not immune to hero worship.

Well here it is, the last installment of our awesome interview. I had so much fun! What a thrill it was to play with Stanley Clarke, and his musical advice is second to none.  Before we get to the interview, I would like to take a moment to congratulate the entire Stanley Clarke Band for their Grammy win: Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the year! Couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of people. They worked hard, they played well and they won.  Without further ado, here is the last segment of an amazing interview with the Grammy-winning – and very gracious – Stanley Clarke.

Don’t miss Part One and Part Two! Here is a link to our Entire BFMN Stanley Clarke Collection which will be updated to contain the interview and videos from the launch party.

Lloyd Gregory, an Introspective

Paul Bourgeois

The heart beats and the lungs breathe and music exists outside in some place you cannot touch. It has to do with the fabric of the universe, the very essence of everything. And in my mystical travels I wanted to know, you know, because he has always been there, a part of my musical landscape, and I have always known him, even though I couldn’t call his name. But now I am on a search and destroy mission, to specify, as if he was the thing itself. Only a part of the journey which is music, and maybe a bit diminished in the knowing. But we must pretend to know, because knowing is part of paying the bills. And Barefoot has been bumping into people like Lloyd Gregory. So here is Lloyd Gregory.

BFMN Exclusive - Lloyd Gregory Live from Roxboro Label Launch Party

I had the pleasure of meeting guitar virtuoso Lloyd Gregory at Stanley Clarke’s label launch party for Roxboro Entertainment Group.

Lloyd is one of the premiere artists on the Roxboro Label.  Talking in the green room for a moment we found a soft-spoken gentleman relaxing a bit before the show. He talked with us briefly about his new CD and his Roxboro cohorts and then they took the stage.

Played to a packed house his easy style, reminiscent of Wes Montgomery yet distinctly Lloyd Gregory, flowed effortlessly through two beautiful guitar songs. His flow and exuberance caught on and the all-star band, including fellow Roxboro artist Sunnie Paxson, played the songs as if they had been playing together for years.
