February 26 was a very special anniversary for Dan Grigor and me, and we decided to start the day in a very special way: clinking wine glasses over Sunday brunch at the Meritage, overlooking the vines of Callaway’s Vineyard and Winery. What an exquisite choice that turned out to be!

The Pour House in Paso Robles Puts the Special in Specialty Beer Bar

In November each year, Dan Grigor gravitates to the Paso Robles area to share some “quality time” with a group of dear friends, laughing and drinking their way through Wine Country in a tour bus…equipped with a stripper pole. Last year, we launched a new tradition – and helped finance the adventure – by arriving a little early to make new friends and let his 12-string ring in some of the lovely venues in the area.

Though it may not be the fanciest location we played, at our first stop at The Pour House, just off the 101, we found a “Tap Room and Beer Shoppe” where the vibe is absolutely as good as it gets.

Awesome Nobodies Play the Bay

When I play out-of-town shows one of my favorite things to do is to feature a local band.  I have been playing the Bay area lately and I asked my son, Tom, who lives there to hook me up with locals that would fit in with my show. He nailed it.

So, as part of our Awesome Nobodies series, here are two San Francisco Bay area bands that are actually breaking new ground, adding nontraditional instruments and attitudes to good lyrics and a real understanding of music. Smart people with real jobs,  good relationships and PhDs and stuff, having fun playing music for the locals trying to find a break like everyone else.

Dan Grigor Gets Shot in the Head

Sound Advice by Dan Grigor

I’ve had another adventure I’d like to share with you. I now have a custom set of JHAudio In-Ear Monitors and I gotta tell you it has been a wild ride but the sound… the sound… it is as clear as a bell. Every nuance, every note, every rest, every breath… it’s like having the band playing the song in your head. It’s like an angel tinkling in your ear.

There is a story though… let me start at the beginning.

The Slow Moving Lions of the Vegetable World and I

A severely under-featured feature of our site is “Awesome Nobodies.” I would like to take this opportunity to revive it with the wonderful surprise that is the Slow Moving Lions of the Vegetable World. What a treat. Picture this: 4-part harmony, a cello, a guitar, a mandolin and a saw. Yup, you read the right, a saw. What a lovely sound, the cello and the saw, but there are so many wonderful combinations: the pretty voice of Liz Reid and the mandolin, two male voices and Liz, the guitar and the cello, the saw and the mandolin… Ahhh I’m losing track. It’s awesome. Liz sings, plays the guitar and is the principle songwriter; Kevin Skalba has been playing the cello since he was a child; Aaron Burke plays the saw with a subtle, tasty flair; Jacob Stahl is a mandolin maniac! They opened for me at a show recently at Kimo’s in San Francisco and I was so pleased they agreed to play. Delightful they are!

Kennard Ramsey, Somos at Roxboro Launch

Kennard Ramsey album SOMOS

You may not know his name but I guarantee you have heard his music. Kennard Ramsey has contributed to some of our favorite movies, television shows and commercials.

His friendship and collaboration with Stanley Clarke spans decades. When Stanley started his label, Roxboro Entertainment, he convinced Kennard to record his own music and share it with us.

We had the opportunity to hear it first-hand, up-close and personal, and I had the best seat in the house.
