Double Gin and Jazz

I’m sitting at the curve in the bar. It’s a well-routed wooden curve, smoothly polished by at least a couple score of bartenders over the years. I glance at my double Tanqueray and tonic and I see the bandstand’s blue stage lights reflected in the sheen of that polish. Outside the winds are gusting up to 50 knots and the intermittent showers come lashing in hard. This bar, called “The Brewery,” is located on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, exit 718 off of the Redwood Highway, State Route 101. A local jazz band, a quartet, troops up onto the stage. It’s not a real strenuous climb, there is only a 6″ riser. Break time is over, so get back on your heads, it’s time for another set.

Take It From Me by Edward Lapple

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to go on the road with a big-name rock band? Lots of parties, screaming fans, babes, VIP everything? Well, not exactly. Dean Snowden has been a very good friend of mine for a long time. If that fact doesn’t entice you to read an interview with him, then perhaps the fact that he is the official photographer for KISS, plus their VIP Meet and Greet specialist, will.

Take It From Me
by Edward Lapple

I just finished editing a music video for entry into a competition and I was struck by how much I missed some of the analog technology that used to be at our fingertips. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the new digital toys! I’d be as quick to give them up as I would to leave Photoshop behind and return to smelly chemicals in dark rooms. I’m glad to have experienced it, but I’m even happier to be freed from the drudgery.

My current gripe concerns limitations imposed by nonlinear video editing systems that offer no control surfaces other than a mouse and pad.

How does a band get a break these days? Where can you get the airplay that you need to get known? Sure, you’re Internet-hip, you can put it on YouTube. Of course, unless you have a secret plan for driving people to your video, it’s probably going to be like you are a tadpole that has been hurled into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I know, Lady Ga Ga has almost a billion hits, but if you only get 57 just how much promotional good has it done you?

Dream Lovers and the Missing Tapes

We have a new story concerning the items located in the spooky old warehouse. As I wandered through the boxes, I stumbled upon an old VHS tape from 1980. On it, among other things, was an absolutely sublime performance of “Dream Lover” by Tanya Tucker and Glen Campbell. They were in the middle of a torrid love affair. Tanya was the featured performer that night at the Fresno Big Fair and Glen had come up the day before to spend some time with her. They had played some tennis and Glen’s wrist was wrapped in an ace bandage…

Quick piece of trivia here: On what show did Glen Campbell have his first television appearance?

Serendipity Is In the Pocket

Mistakes can be the stuff that dreams are made of. A chance encounter in the night, an accidental phone call to the wrong person who turns out to be Mr. Right, call it serendipity. Serendipity is defined as “good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries.” Another good word is synchronicity. Synchronicity is defined as “the experience of two or more events that are apparently unrelated, occurring together in a meaningful manner.” As musicians we need to constantly keep ourselves open to serendipity and aware of synchronicity.

A Chance Musical Encounter

I just had a chance encounter and long conversation with a fellow that I met at the Saugus Swap Meet. It was hotter than a biscuit out there and we had both ducked under a vendor’s EZ-Up which offered an oasis of cool in this Saugus Sahara. The item that caught both of our attention was a three-channel National Electronics Microphone Mixer, which I’m guessing was about a 1937 model. It was the earliest mic mixer that I had ever seen.
