They both looked at Passion Bloom.

“Do ya think she knows too much, boss?”

Walter thought for a moment. “Oh, dear. Does this make me a super villain? I suppose it does. Yes, Anthony, she does know too much. Prepare the Victrola!”

“I’m sitting right here,” Passion Bloom complained.

“My dear. My dear dear dear… dear. Soon there will be no ‘right here’ to worry about.”

Paul BourgeoisHe burst into the warehouse. “Anthony, let’s get this over with. Where’s the box?” But the place was empty. His voice echoed in the dusty corners. Passion Bloom followed behind with interest.

“What’s this all about?” she asked.

He looked about. Their voices still seemed to vibrate in the huge space. Everything was so still. Expectant. This was the right time in the right place. “We should go to my office.” She took his hand and he led her up the catwalk.

Paul BourgeoisHe pulled a seat near the window for her. His studio was in a Manhattan office building and looked out over New York. The financial district. She sat straight and politely, hands folded in her lap.

“Can I make you some tea? Chamomile? Honey?”

She nodded and smiled sweetly. Now, just as he was about to destroy the Universe, something like this had to happen. Of all the dumb luck.

Symphony in E# (The Tuner, Part 1 of 4)

Paul BourgeoisWalter Mint had fallen through a crack in reality. He had come from the Land of E#.

In our Universe E# does not exist. String theory tells us that the space between E and F is so tiny it is impossible to jam an extra note. In theory, this mythical note is dangerous, extremely sharp and deadly. If a tuning fork were ever invented that could resonate at such a note, it would cut a gaping hole in the fabric of space and time.

And Walter was desperate, and willing to do anything, to get home.

Freedom of Choice

Paul BourgeoisI was thinking about someone. He’s a complainer. He says he has problems. Of course. Everybody has problems. He claims that society has taken away his ability to choose. He says society defines our places within it and our choices. As we seek the American ideal of achievement and comfort we are stripped of our individuality and our choices become meaningless as we become clones of the corporate capitalist society. If we choose not to choose then the above argument becomes a good excuse for giving up in our effort of self improvement and any attempt to redeem society. Then I thought of Devo and their song Freedom of Choice.

Melvin Whist made his way backstage, Norman Ray tagging behind him like a dog. Whist had come up from Hell and stopped time itself just to give this musician some advice. They were dumbing down a bit more every generation. How could you play with people like this who would sign away things of true value for things like money and fame? Sure, it made things easier for Melvin, but it just wasn’t as much fun anymore. Now it was just routine. He turned to see the tired performer straggling along behind him and waited for him to catch up. “Do you want to hear about Robert Johnson or not?”

Norman shrugged. Melvin sighed and began.

The Devil's Contract (Time, Part 1 of 2)

The platform rose to the stage and Norman Ray held the Flying V high over his head, the guitar covered with flame and details of eternal torment, Goya and Hieronymus Bosch. He screamed. The audience screamed. Machines vomited smoke and flame and he was surrounded. Drums and power chords thundered. This was his time. All of life, his life, all creation had led to this moment. This was why he was born. White faced, his eyes framed black, mock blood streaming down the sides of his lips, the audience chanted, “Norman! Norman! Norman!” This is what the deal said he would have, and he sucked it in. He stepped through the smoke and flame.

And then the world froze.
